We are a technical Professional Services consulting company. Our Professional Services division has six major areas of expertise: Web development, client/server development, database specialists, network administrators, technical writers, and code analysis. Code Analysis
PowerObjects has developed considerable expertise in the area of analyzing and modifying large bodies of program source code. This expertise has been acquired over the past four years primarily because of the of heavy emphasis on bringing legacy applications to Y2K compliance. Much work has been done developing skills and tools to perform in-depth analysis of large libraries of COBOL programs and mainframe JCL. These skills have since been extended and are currently used in the post-Y2k era.
Examples of how this currently is applied are:
- File or database field/column names are changed and all references modified in the relevant COBOL programs.
- JCL libraries are analyzed to determine what files are used by what programs.
- COBOL programs are analyzed to determine which files are read-only and which files are modified.
- Libraries of JCL designed for one host machine are translated to run on another.
- Literals appearing on screens and/or reports are modified.
Any task of this type requiring a large amount of manual location and modification of programs, JCL, etc. is a candidate for automation. PowerObjects' approach to projects of this kind has always been more cost-effective than the typical manual approach.
The techniques employed typically use Perl, a powerful string-handling and pattern-matching programming language. In most cases, the search results are stored in a relational database to enable further analysis.
